There are times when a business needs to present information that fairly represents their strengths.

This could be for planning purposes, as the decision makers are contemplating the direction the business should take.  That means making projections, "pro-forma calculations", or "what-if scenarios".  To mathematically portray a future event can make a decision much easier, or can save you from a costly mistake.

Information Sharing

Serious business funding is based on a reliable business plan.  Whether you are approaching your bank about a loan or the Small Business Administration, you need to have a well developed business plan.  The lender will make a determination based on what they believe the business will be worth.

Not only will your business plan demonstrate the future value of your business, but it can effectively characterize the current value.  If you are in negotiations with someone for investment capital, whether it is venture capital or a private investor, you need to substantiate the value of the business.  Otherwise, you might find yourself giving away more equity than you must.

Look Ahead

Accounting has the connotation of reporting past events.  Business plans use the same principles about money, but apply them to the future.  Using a business plan can help you anticipate the future and prepare for it.
